Alton College is a purpose built six form college built around 1980. Expansion has seen student numbers rise to in excess of 1500 and courses being heavily dependent on data transfer speeds. SNS were contracted to replace the entire fibre backbone throughout the campus.
Project – Complete replacement of fibre backbone
Special Resource – DBS clearance of operatives. Restricted time scale
Client – College Trust – HSDC Alton
Due to natural growth, Alton College required their existing 62.5 um fibre optic network to be upgraded to a standard necessary for the rigours of modern-day courses, requiring much higher band width. SNS selected a combination of 16 and 8 core OM4 50um, capable of supporting the 10GB required, to each of the 17 LAN cabinets. Works were carried out over the summer break but had to be co-ordinated around many booked extracurricular activities.
The project was completed on time and included a late request for the supply of specified SFP’s due to a supplier failure.
